Dr. Harrison Schmitt was the Apollo 17 lunar module pilot, and visited the moon in 1972. A trained geologist; he was the first scientist-astronaut in space. He and fellow astronaut Gene Cernan spent 72 hours on the moon and conducted 3 EVA's to the surface. He later became a United States Senator (1980's). Dr Schmitt is on the Board of Governors for the National Space Society (US) and is also a member of the Mars Society. |
